of the International Fencing Federation, I am pleased to welcome all participants
and guests of the Moscow Saber International Tournament.
This tournament holds a specific place in our international calendar, for it is the last Grand Prix competition before the major events of the season, namely: continental championships and the World Championships. All the best athletes from all over the world will attend it, hence the list of participants, containing many fencing stars, is really impressive.
The Moscow Saber is one of the world’s oldest and most important fencing tournaments. To win it means to become part of the world saber fencing elite, the cherished goal of each athlete who visits Moscow.
The FIE organizes Grand Prix tournaments at the highest level, seeking to attract the attention of not only fencing connoisseurs, but also those who just began to show interest in this sport. From this perspective the Moscow Saber ranks high up among the most prominent tournaments and is noted for its highly competitive, and yet friendly atmosphere.
I wish the athletes to be at their best, demonstrate their skills and their true character – that’s the only way to achieve top results.
|On behalf of the Russian Fencing Federation I am
very happy to welcome you to the Moscow Sabre International Tournament.
These competitions complete the Grand Prix Series of the FIE season 2016/2017. Without any doubt the tournament will be a decisive contest in sabre fencing before the main events of this year: Zonal Championships and World Championship.
It has become a tradition that in majority of the national teams the generational change takes place in the post-Olympic season. Athletes, who used to defend the honor of their respective countries during many years, finish their career. Young and ambitious fencers take over from them. It may happen that Moscow Sabre will discover for Russian and fencing supporters new title favorite in this weapon.
The Moscow Sabre Tournament has a long and glorious tradition. For the first time it took place in 1973. From then onwards the competitions were staged at the highest possible organizational level and featured on its fencing pistes the strongest sabre fencers of the planet. A large number of World and Olympic Champions are on the list of the tournament's winners.
Sabre bouts represent an impressive, dynamic and masterful performance. I have no doubt that all those who will come to the VTB Ice Palace will become witnesses and participants of a genuine fencing celebration.
I wish to the athletes to display on the fencing pistes their best qualities and to fight until the last hit. I wish to spectators and to fans to truly enjoy a beautiful and uncompromising fencing.
VTB ICE PALACE
The Moscow Saber Tournament will be held for the first time at the small indoor arena of the VTB Ice Palace, known as well as Legends Arena, situated at the address Avtozavodskaya Street, 23.
The VTB Ice Palace is the first sports facility in Russia, which accommodates
at once three indoor arenas under one roof. The big indoor arena has a capacity
of 12 000 seats (ice hockey matches) and 14 000 seats (concerts), the
small indoor arena has a capacity of 3000 seats and a training ice skating rink
has a capacity of 200 seats. In addition to that the big indoor arena and the
small indoor arena are transformers, which allows in as short a time as
possible to stage not only ice-hockey matches, but also competitions of
different kind of sport, as well as concerts, festivals, exhibitions and shows
of national and international level. These features make out of the palace a
unique and a multifunctional sports and entertaining venue.
Though the VTB Ice Palace has been operational since slightly over a year, it hosted already such events as First Channel Ice-Hockey Cup in 2015 and in 2016, the boxing bout for the WBA super world cruiserweight title between Roy Jones Jr and Enzo Maccarinelli, the KHL Star Match, International Judo Tournament, Ricky Martin and Pet Shop Boys concerts as well as a large number of other events. However, fencers will be guests of the VTB Ice Palace for the first time.
